Society visit to Sandham Memorial Chapel
June 23 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
The chapel houses a grand series of large-scale murals by the celebrated war artist Stanley Spencer.
It was constructed to honour the ‘forgotten dead’ of the First World War, who were not remembered on any official memorials. The murals were inspired by Spencer’s own experiences as a medical orderly at the Beaufort Hospital in Bristol and as both orderly and soldier on the Salonika front. It took six years to complete the 19 oil paintings.
Details of arrangements to follow.
