SUMMARY:The History of RAF Welford
DESCRIPTION:RAF Welford was initially planned as a standard World War II 3-runway bomber airfield under the command of Membury but it was handed over to the USAAF in 1943 prior to its completion. Aircraft and gliders flown from the airfield participated in D-day and subsequent support operations – it was transferred back to the RAF at the end of the war and closed in 1952 but was reopened in 1955 as a munitions storage facility to support the USAF during the cold war. Its use for munitions storage has continued since then and it now comes under the control of RAF Croughton.\nAlan is a past chairman of RAF Welford Historical Society. The Society runs a museum on the base site which can be visited by prior arrangement.
